How you doin?

My husband and I watch F.R.I.E.N.D.S every night before bed. We’ve seen every episode but continue to belly laugh. It’s the comfort food of television.

Smelly cat, smelly cat… what are they feeding you.

Why do we love that show? Why does my husband yell PIVOT every time he moves furniture? Why when we go to sushi and order unagi do we say it like Ross? Why do I still get goose bumps when Monica proposes to Chandler? It’s simple… IYKYK and FRIENDS reminds us that we know enough to relate to the very ordinary struggles and challenges life throws at us.

They don’t know that we know they know we know.

Here’s what I’ve come to realize: We are a little of each of them. Inside each of us lies some uptight-Monica, some nerd-Ross, some odd-ball-Phoebe, some childhood-wounds-Chandler, some ding-dong-Joey and some independent-seeking-Rachel. We identify with their quirks and see a reflection of ourselves in the silly and often embarrassing things they do. We relate to all six because we HAVE BEEN all six. It’s just makes sense.

Ooooh. My. God.

It’s easy to feel their vulnerability and appreciate their ability to laugh at themselves. We understand their stress, frustration and heartache because we have also lost love and had to navigate tough relationships.

We were on a break.

Let’s face it— life is hard but having people who have your back makes it manageable. There’s great value in having those who are close to you- not just in proximity but also in emotional presence. Friends who are always there, year after year, who love and accept us no matter what. Friends who become family.

That’s right. I stepped up. She’s my friend and she needed help. If I had to, I’d pee on any of you.

There’s nothing better than true friendship. Your people. The real ones. The solids who walk in when every one else walks out. The ones who offer loyalty, honesty and forgiveness. Those who stand the test of time and who’ll be there for you, cause you’ll be there for them too.

See. He’s her lobster.
