Gratitude With Nowhere to Go

Last week, I loaded up the car and drove my daughter eight hours away to begin graduate school.

She’s been my buddy this summer.

My sidekick, my partner in crime, the person who is almost always up for whatever I’m doing.

When I pulled into the driveway after work, she often walked outside to greet me.

It was such a small thing.

But I know enough to understand that the smallest things are often the things we miss most.

The unfolded blankets on the couch.

The half-finished drink on the counter.

The random conversations in the morning.

Someone waiting for you to come home.

For so many years, I thought the big moments would be the ones that stayed with me.

Birthdays. Graduations. Vacations.

And they do.

But so much of parenthood is tucked inside the ordinary days we didn’t realize were special while we were living them.

That’s part of what makes letting go so hard.

We’re not just letting go of them; we’re letting go of the everyday life we shared with them.

We spend their entire childhood preparing them to leave us.

We encourage independence. Adventure. Courage. Big dreams.

Then they do.

And somehow, we’re surprised when it hurts.

Because no matter how ready they are to go, we’re never quite ready for the space they leave behind.

Last week, I helped my daughter begin another chapter.

I’m excited for her. Proud of her.

But I cried when it was time to say goodbye.

Deep down, I knew this is exactly what we raised her to do.

Go.

Grow.

Build a life that is hers.

Chase her dreams.

And trust that we will still be here when she comes home.

This week, I pulled into the driveway, and she wasn’t there to greet me.

I felt that one.

Maybe that deep ache is just gratitude with nowhere to go.

Gratitude for a summer with my girl.

For all those ordinary days.

For being her mom.

For the privilege of watching her fly.

We raised her to go. To live. To be brave.

I just didn’t know how much I would miss watching her come home.
