Every now and then, you get a moment that stays with you.
The kind that feels too special to keep to yourself.
The kind that quietly settles into your soul and stays there.
A few weeks ago, at a birthday brunch, I casually shared what I called my “Christmas Plan.”
I told a group of girlfriends I wanted to gather about ten of us, go out for breakfast, and have everyone bring a $100 bill. When the check came, no matter the total, we would each put in our $100 and quietly bless the server during the holidays.
Without hesitation, they said, “We’re in.”
And honestly, having friends who don’t overthink a good idea but simply lean in is a gift all on its own.
Fast forward to this weekend.
April. Not exactly Christmas season.
We were celebrating my friend Whitney’s birthday. She has a way of pulling us out of our usual bubble and into somewhere new. This time, she picked a place she found on TikTok in downtown Sacramento: The Dumpling King.
None of us had been before, and all of us were excited.
The moment we walked in, we were greeted by something unexpected.
A full-size, lit-up Christmas tree stood right at the entrance.
And then there was Lilly.
Our server.
Twenty-one years old.
Pigtails.
A smile that could light up a room.
From the very beginning, her energy was magnetic. There were nine of us, yet she made each person feel seen.
She laughed easily, helped us with menu choices, and made it all feel less like service and more like connection.
As the night went on and the incredible food kept coming, it became clear this wasn’t an act.
This was her.
Pure, genuine, unapologetic joy.
At one point, we told her what a breath of fresh air she was, how her energy had shifted the entire table.
She paused, clearly moved. Then, with tears in her eyes, she shared her story: a near-death medical experience just last year, a time when she couldn’t walk, and now her mom recently diagnosed with cancer.
We sat there, a little stunned.
Because here was someone carrying so much… and still choosing light.
No bitterness.
No weight placed on anyone else.
Just gratitude.
Just presence.
Just love, even for a table of strangers.
And in that moment, everything clicked.
The Christmas tree.
The conversation.
The feeling.
It was the nudge we didn’t know we needed.
Why were we waiting until December to carry out the plan?
Why do we wait for a season to do something meaningful?
So we didn’t.
We blessed Lilly that night.
But the truth is, Lilly blessed us more.
She reminded us that life doesn’t get easier before we decide to show up differently.
That our circumstances don’t define us—our perspective does.
That goodness is always there, waiting for us to slow down enough to notice.
And maybe that’s the real takeaway.
You don’t have to wait for the holidays to be generous.
Gratitude and kindness don’t need a calendar. They just need a willing heart.
You don’t have to wait for the perfect timing to do something good.
Because sometimes the most meaningful moments come when you least expect them.
And sometimes the moment you think you’re giving something away…
is the moment you’re handed something you didn’t even know you needed.

Thank you for sharing the goodness and joy.
