Last week my husband grabbed his whistle, found his clipboard, and started eating throat drops to save his voice. Just like that, football season was back.

He coaches the offensive line.

The big guys whose job is to make everyone else look good.

They are the protectors. The ones who sacrifice individual glory so someone else can shine. They understand teamwork at its purest, and they work their tails off for the good of the people around them.

They are the unsung heroes.

Sound familiar, moms?

Offensive linemen are the blue-collar dads of every football team— a team within a team.

They rarely hear their names announced. They don’t score touchdowns. They don’t make the highlight reels and won’t be found on a cereal box.

They do the blocking so everyone else can do the scoring.

I’ve been around offensive linemen for more years than I can count. They are some of the smartest, funniest, and most adaptable athletes you’ll meet. They know their role, and they embrace it. They understand that their value isn’t measured by headlines or trophies. It’s found in the strength of the unit they help build.

It made me think about the world we live in.

We are surrounded by messages that tell us to build our brand, grow our following, chase recognition, and ask, What’s in it for me?

But maybe what our families, friendships, workplaces, and communities need most are more offensive linemen.

People who protect the people they care about.

People who make others better.

People who celebrate someone else’s success as if it were their own.

People who quietly carry the weight when no one is watching.

People who show up every day, do the work, and understand that not everything valuable gets applause.

People who understand life isn’t an individual sport.

So this football season, BE an offensive lineman.

Protect your people.

Work for the good of others.

Measure your success not by how much attention you receive, but by how many people are better because you were standing beside them.

The world has enough people chasing the spotlight.

What it needs are more people willing to do the blocking.

Because the strongest teams are built by people who care more about the mission than the applause.
